History of 'Tyne'

Although Tyne is officially 56 years old, it has only stood on its’ current site for 38 years

Tyne Boys Club was started in 1949 by Ron Chirnside in the basement of ‘Knotts Flats, originally as a Boxing Club.

Tyne moved to it’s present site in 1964. It consisted solely of a large, wooden gymnasium but, over the years additional rooms were built on, thanks to Wimpey Construction, as the Club expanded. At it’s peak the old ‘wooden hut’ was considered to be state of the art!

However, over the years the old Tyne began to suffer from old age, occasional vandalism and the odd fire.

An application was made to the National Lottery Charities Board in 1999 for funding to demolish the old hut and build a new Community Centre. The grant was awarded in full  -  £388,235  -  and work began in May 2000.

The job was completed by Whelans (on time!!!) and the doors were opened on the brand new ‘Tyne Youth & Community Centre’ for the first time in October 2000!

The new Tyne Youth & Community Centre was officially opened by local MP Alan Campbell and since then he holds a surgery for local constituents once a year.

The most recent user figures show that for the 12 month period ending 31st March 2005, there were 12,740 visitors and 3,329 visits by Members.

Total number of users in last 12 months = 16,069

Remember everyone at Tyne is a volunteer - no paid workers!
